As a child I had a dentist who enjoyed inflicting pain, and caused a lot of problems as he was incompetent.

I doubt that as a child you were qualified to assess your dentists competence. Dentistry has also evolved greatly in the last 50 years. From high speed drills to ultrasonic scalers....

I most certainly was competent enough to access that sewer rat's dentistry. His fillings would fall out on my way home. He was sacked by my parents and ended up in a lot of trouble.

It doesn't matter how high tech the equipment, it's a service that relies entirely on the skill of the individual dentist. Some should not be in the job.

Of course my parents sacked the dentist as he wasn't doing a good job. If my present dentist wasn't suiting me, I would find another, the cost of dental care isn't cheap.
