If it's people you want then Wollongong produced Wayne Gardner (Motorcycle GP World Champion) and Brett and Shane Lee (test cricketers).

Brighton is internationally famous as a tourist spot - predominently for this:

Re: What is your local town famous for?

Unfortunately, my nearest town, Oswestry, is famous (or should I say infamous!) for the outbreak of Foote and Mouth disease in 1967/1968.

A farmer at Bryn Farm, Nantmawr, Oswestry, was worried about a sow being lame, so called in the vet. He confirmed it was Foote & Mouth Disease. The next day, 26 more of her pigs were discovered to have the disease, It was a terrible time for farmers as all their animals caught the disease and were all slaughtered, and all other farms in Britain were ordered to have their healthy herds killed to prevent contagion. It spread quickly to most parts of the country and lasted 8 months. The economic cost was terrible.

I still recall seeing the huge pyres of fires in the designated local fields where the government ordered the slaughter of all farm animals and their bodies burnt in massive open pits.

A truly terrible sight from what I heard from others.
