Re: Using Proper Writing Skills

We've had this type of topic before on here. I despise the use of text-speak on forums, but for the person who started this topic to have used the word "gotten" is a bit laughable when that word doesn't actually exist in the English language.

I can excuse the Americanisms of honor, color etc to a certain degree because they don't know any better, but not gotten as that term has no place in English. It is, "we have got" or "we have not got" or "we do not have" but never gotten.

Yes, spelling does matter but, having said that, the most important thing about folk on forums is that they are attempting to communicate with each other.

There's no such word as gotten!

Oh yes there is Mollie! in America it is perfectly fine, not necessarily correct but fine by them See Here

And from the link :---
Gotten is correct, and very old. In England many people wrongly assume that gotten is a modern Americanism, but the truth is the English more-or-less stopped using it, and have forgotten (!) that they used to use it.

Re: Using Proper Writing Skills

Why do they call it text speak when it is written?

Teenagers speak the way they do due to lazyness and trying to sound different.

Wrinkley you should acknowledge Margo Roark.

The word 'gotten' is in three of my dictionaries, Mollie - it is the past participle of 'get'.

It is occasionally used in the UK but is quite commonly used in USA.

Annie,
You stay the same, you have always been a brilliant poster as long as Iv'e known you, so no such apology is required.

Now what was that about conjugate the verb go?

Present: I go, you go, he/she/it goes, we go, you go, they go.

Preterite: I went,,you went,,he/she/it went, we went, you went, they went.
All that from a primary school education

Iv'e gotta go
