your computer

is it a laptop or desktop one. was it shop bought -built for you by a company to your specification or second hand? or even built by yourself. Was it built for a dedicated purpose , in my case for photographic work mainly

I, with sons help, built mine in 2012 to a budget of Just about £1200 . Started out on windows 7 but upgraded nearly everything since then. lets see what did I upgrade?

from windows 7 to windows 10
Power unit from 350w to 750w
changed cooling fans to quiet running
changed cd/dvd player
new sound card
changed graphic card
from 8 gig of RAM to 16 gig of RAM
HHD "c"drive t0 SSD drive
added another HDD drive for storage on board and 2 TB extrnl HDD second backup drive

It already had several USB 2 and 3 ports which were enough

Like any desktop home built computer, , one is always, or at least I am, upgrading components,. Either because they stopped working - don't work on newer platforms or adding parts for improved performance.

it in fact 3 months spent selecting which bits to get For example I wanted a computer case that had input fans on the front and extractor fans on the back for a straight through cooling unit. Many have to extractor fans on the side slowing down air flow. Each component was chosen not necessarily the best but what the budget for that component allowed for

Therefore when I built mine every part was costed to comply with the overall budget at the time.

My initial thoughts were should I go for a pre-made one from a local shop- go to a specialist computer company that built to a spec- or build my own. It all really came down to cost and what I got for my money. Building ones own you know what is in and your not paying for build costs a company charges

Far too complicated for me Realspeed. I just went to PC World I got a pretty looking silver Pentium 3 laptop, one at a price I could afford.

Nothing wrong in that many do the same. Only thing is to get it repaired it more than likely has to go back to the shop

I wanted something I could pull apart and upgrade components

Me to Aerolor I don't give dam what it is as long as it reliably sends emails, gives access to the internet and doesn't take up too much room.
I chose my laptop courtesy of the Which guide and reviews on Amazon (I go to the worst ones first).

Re: your computer

2 desktops, 2 laptops and 1 netbook between 3 people. No problems very often. Have a really good IT guy - mate of son's - who lives close by. Have good broadband speed. Have been lucky so far. I am no computer expert but I know enough to solve most everyday probs.

Re: your computer

Costs were bought home to me when Sue mac laptop touchpad was cracked and hard to use. The shop wanted an out of this world price to repair it.
Me straight onto ebay selected to component and a set of screw drivers to fit and the whole lot was miniscule to what a shop wanted.

When it went back for the first time for being noisy (fan) they changed and lost the hard drive which didn't need changing So lost all her stuff she put on there.

I could have done it for again a fraction of what they charged but at the time Sue would not let me do it, and she lost out. Something she later regretted

Re: your computer

I've bought 2 desktops and 3 laptops in the last 21 years, all from PC World. The most recent a Lenovo W10 lappy was bought from PCW online because the shop didn't have the one I wanted with extra RAM.

I was thinking the other day how cheap they now are ... my first computer purchase a Compaq laptop in '98 cost about £1000 my most recent about a third that.

I wouldn't know how to do that realspeed.
Touch wood, I have never had to send one into a shop, except for the time when a virus messed me up. I took it to a small local shop and he sorted it out for £30.
I first had a desktop, which lasted several years, then a Sony laptop (7 years) which I did upgrade for free to W10 It was the screen that went on that - which made it not worth repairing.. The one I have now is about 3 years old and cost me £320. I don't use it for work anymore and don't think I would get the use out of one costing any more than £350-£400. They seem to get better and faster each time I look, but the prices don't seem to go up a lot.
I also have a Samsung tablet which is fairly modern, although I prefer my lappy.
