How low can they go?

I just had to buy myself a new portable USB HDD. Over the years I have bought many but I prefer Western Digital.

Yesterday I bought a 2TB drive (2000GB) for $99 from the local department store, when I got it home I thought it was very light so as a matter of interest I weighed it and compared it with some drives bought within the last few years. They are all WD Essentials type and all made in Thailand.

The weight difference was amazing. The drive I just bought is on the right with the two previous drives to its left. As you can see it is lighter than a drive only half its capacity.

The new drive is about 40% lighter than the same size drive bought only a year or so ago. Unless it is the fact that the old 2TB drive is nearly full

Quite amazing. I hope it lasts as well as the older drives.

That is pretty lightweight. It might weigh more when it's full of files.

The portable external hard drives I use are from Seagate, a rival to Western Digital. I find them alright and have two on the go at the moment, a 1TB and a 2TB. They have become cheaper and cheaper as time goes by. The capacity increases with the price decreasing, not a bad deal for anyone buying them.

The 1TB I use to back-up anything and everything plus transferring files sometimes. The 2TB is used as a permanent back-up on my iMac. Using TimeMachine it's constantly backing-up everything, I've never really looked at it much, it just sits there on the desk doing what it should!
