Re: Diplomatic Immunity

Why does diplomatic immunity apply to the whole family? It is probably just one person who is working in whatever position for their country so diplomatic immunity should apply to just that one person.

It's not just in really serious cases such as this one that diplomatic immunity is claimed, there are other serious crimes where diplomatic immunity is claimed:

Also what about the £millions of parking tickets that are not paid! We are probably paying for all those in the long run. Plus of course this is not just happening in this country, it's going on worldwide!

Re: Diplomatic Immunity

It does not usually apply to the whole family, or even spouses, as blanket cover. It only covers certain diplomats, some spouses and some dependents, and only usually then in London, although some are eligible for cover outside of London.

Apparently the woman's husband was a spy and so I would guess that the US government will keep things as tight as possible.

Plenty of UK citizens do exactly the same - and worse.

Re: Diplomatic Immunity

Wasn’t there a diplomat who hit someone and killed them in their new Bentley or Rolls Royce in London, a few months ago?

We drive on the left hand side in this country .
The motor cyclist was on his correct side ..
She killed him .
It may well have been an accident but running away under diplomatic immunity to America is shameful behaviour .
It’s is also a criminal offence .

Two things.

#1 is that astounding numbers of unpaid parking fines imposed but rejected or simply ignored by so many Embassy staff in London alone.

#2 I have a cousin who is a member of the diplomatic corps who is one of the sods that collects parking tickets almost like a hobby.

Not so it’s applies in most countries and most embassies /consulates have what would be described as a ‘spy ‘on their staff .
This would not be made public though as it would defeat the whole object of the exercise .
The home country in this case the USA may waive diplomatic immunity if a serious crime has been committed .
