Close Call

Ever had one?

Driving on the interstate, a car three lengths in front of me in the adjacent passing lane, driving way to fast, hit the concrete median. The car went airborne and flipped into my lane. I don't know how I missed it, but I did, without a scratch.

I've never had that sense of being so close to death before.

Have you?

Re: Close Call

Pleased to hear you are OK Surfer. A car landing in front of you is probably the worst thing you can imagine. Well done for having good driving skills.

Re: Close Call

oh heck SM you poor thing, you must have been terrified. I'm so glad to hear you are ok.

Quite different from a car crash but the nearest I've come to death was when I had a serious bout of pneumonia a couple of years ago. That was very frightening as I couldn't breathe. It took me a long time to get over it, months.

Re: Close Call

yes a long time ago we we going to a dog show, travelling on the motorway a kid in a car miles too powerful for him hit the central reservation and flipped and rolled right in front of us. The car went so high in the air car could have gone easily underneath , must have gone at least 12 ft in the air. He rolled and flipped ( rear/front ways) so many times he landed on the inside lane barrier the other side of but he got out unhurt, amazing. Seems talking to the police injuries happen with a sudden stop, with continuous movement they often get out relatively uninjured.
All three lans stopped then some idiot from way back decided to weave his way through the traffic until he stopped when he saw what had happened, and yes he got a mouthful from all the drivers

That must have been frightening, Surfermom.

Late OH & I were driving to an appointment for OH to see a specialist at the hospital.
Going towards a steep downward hill an estate car towing a caravan passed us on the inside lane, far too fast, the caravan started twisting from side to side, we watched it happen, OH had stopped the car & the caravan flipped over, flipped the car around towards us, the car hit the central reservation, went up on two wheels but luckily righted on all 4 wheels as it came back towards us, the van was flat packed. It stopped a few feet in front of our car, meanwhile other cars had stopped with hazzard lights on & the whole road our side came to a halt. We got over to the lay-by a few yards away & OH went back to see if he could help, while I stayed in the car shaking like a leaf. I have never been so scared.
There was a mother & two kids in the car, no one hurt. We couldn't stay, but an off duty policeman who had seen it happen as well, took charge, said to us to go. so we did.
Coming back on the other carriageway some time later, we saw a low loader loading the car & what was left of the caravan.
I now avoid being behind a towing caravan & always get whoever is driving to leave it far behind.

Re: Close Call

Glad that nobody on here has been hurt by these close calls.

Two similar ones spring to mind -

1/. Driving down a slip road to join the M6 at Knutsford. The car in front was towing a caravan. Caravan wheel came off and the whole thing swerved towards the left, making it possible for me to carry on and avoid collision. In my mirror, I saw the caravan flip over. If it had swerved to the right, I might not be on here today.

2/. Driving along the M60 near Worsley. The lorry directly in front of me seems to shunt the car in front of it sideways and, again, towards the inside lane, leaving clear passage for me to get through. In my mirror (I'd slowed down considerably), I saw the driver of the car get out to remonstrate strongly with the lorry driver, and no other cars seemed affected by this collision.

Although not an accident, on another occasion, again on the M60 near Worsley in slowish heavy traffic (circa 40-50mph), the lorry behind me was tailgating me flashing his lightsand blasting his horn in spite of there being nowhere for me to realistically move to, nor any huge distance between me and the car in front. So, I did what I often do in such cases and touched my brakes to turn on the brake lights without slowing. This caused him to slam his brakes on, judder to a halt, and stall his engine to the extent that I don't think he was able to restart easily (checking my mirror indicated that he was having problems). Should I have done it? Dunno. But if he hadn't been about 2 foot behind me, driving aggressively, flashing his lights and blowing his horn then I wouldn't have felt the need to suggest to him that his driving was dangerous.
