Weed or shrub?

Have come back from a sojourn abroad to find the garden has gone feral .

Could anyone tell me what this is . There are two out there and have been ok and unobtrusive previously but now have grown to about six feet tall and are vaguely triffid like.

It looks like a Triffid to me...

Try a little horse manure at the base of the plants, and water twice a day.

Important - get your husband to do the watering.

Muddy brush the leaves what does it smell like

ETA looked again though is was Artemesia (love the scent) not sure now...

I have no idea what it is, but if nobody on here can offer useful suggestions, cut a piece of it off and take it to a garden centre to ask. If you tell them you are looking for ways to care for it they will soon find what it is, in the hope of selling you something to care for it.

Megs suggestion may be correct and would fit in with the massive growth.

A weed is any plant in the wrong place.

It looks like it could be a sambucus plant, but don't quote me on it! Look at Plumosa aurea, can't put link on sorry.

They look woody Tessa this is soft and pliable .
They have been in the garden for years but have never grown so big before .

So simpe to tell the difference between a weed and a shrub. Weeds are hard to get rid of and shrubs are not
