Well done EU - Apple to pay 13 billion in unpaid taxes!

Apple should repay Ireland 13bn euros, European Commission rules

Ireland should recover up to €13bn (£11bn) from Apple in back taxes, the European Commission has ruled.

After a three-year investigation, it has concluded that the US firm's Irish tax benefits are illegal.

The Commission said Ireland enabled the company to pay substantially less than other businesses, in effect paying a corporate tax rate of no more than 1%.
This comment puts it nicely:

And who said the EU was bad? Managed to do what the UK government seems incapable of wanting to do. Think of how much better off we would all be if giants like Apple, Amazon, Google, Starbucks etc etc etc were all pursued and sued for unpaid tax.

Can't blame them for trying but yes, a good result.

And as a counter to your continuing anti Brexit stance,

Brexit Britain could become home to giant global firms which fear huge EU tax demands after Apple ruling

Downing Street says tech giant is 'welcome' in Britain after Irish row
EU wants Apple to repay £11bn in tax even though Ireland doesn't want it
Experts says a UK free from Brussels could do its own special tax deals

Brexit Britain’s booming! EVERY region of the country is more prosperous than last year, a new study finds

Wealth, spending or earnings rose across the country in year to April 2016
Biggest increase to household wealth was in Scotland with 13 per cent
North east is least prosperous but rate of growth is still 'impressive'
One in every 67 people in the UK is now a millionaire, down 3.8 per cent

See the Irish Government as well as Apple are against this ruling and will appeal

As was stated by an Irish Spokesperson and echoed by others commentators.

The EU should have no say in the Tax affairs of any member country.

Well I'm sure Irish citizens will have something to say about that

I don't think the Irish people will have too much to say if Apple pull their operation out of Ireland and a few thousand tax paying Irish people are queueing outside the job centre on Monday morning.

Nothing that Apple was doing (or has done) was illegal. You can't blame a company for taking advantage of the loopholes in the tax system.

I think they might have got the message though somehow.

With regard to the EU and the fine, Apple and the Irish government tried to gain an advantage over the other European countries and got caught out. They deserve everything they get. It does raise a worrying precedent about the EUs intererence in the tax affairs of a sovereign country though. Thank goodness we' re leaving.
