Wales - Restrictions will be introduced in Denbighshire, Flintshire, Conwy and Wrexham

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...trictions.html

More than 500,000 people in North Wales will be plunged into a local lockdown amid a spike in infections, the country's health minister announced tonight.

From 6pm on Thursday, residents of Denbighshire, Flintshire, Conwy and Wrexham will be banned from mixing indoors with other households.

People will also not be allowed to enter of leave these areas without a reasonable excuse, such as work or education.

However, travel will be permitted through the affected areas to avoid cutting off motorists from getting to or out of Gwynedd and Anglesey on the A55.

The recent rise in coronavirus cases has been blamed on people socialising indoors.
The announcement this evening will affect around 504,000 people and will bring the number of people in Wales under lockdown across 16 local areas to a total of more than 2.3 million*.
That may not sound a lot to people in England but the population of Wales is only 3 million.

Just six mostly rural counties - Monmouthshire, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey and Powys - will not be subject to restrictions from Thursday.

Covid: Tighter rules 'will take time' to show results, says Johnson

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54362900

Boris Johnson told a Downing Street briefing that the high number of daily cases and "tragic increase" in deaths "show why our plan is so essential". New measures to tackle the rise in coronavirus cases "will take time to feed through". He called for "collective forbearance, common sense and willingness to make sacrifices". But he said he would "not hesitate" to impose further restrictions if needed.

Mr Johnson said the nation could face the winter "with confidence" because it is now better prepared than it was in March. The preparations include being on track for 500,000 tests a day by the end of October, 2,000 beds in seven Nightingale hospitals and a four-month supply of protective equipment such as masks, gowns and visors. He said they had trebled the number of ventilators in the NHS to 31,500 in the last six months.
While we're waiting, there are more cases per day now than there were at the peak of the "first wave" way back in March/April/May .....

The first question is, if the government is so prepared, why is this the case .....

The second question is, if the government is so prepared, how many more cases are being forecast for the next few weeks .....

How much of the UK is now under some sort of lockdown?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-52934822
The nature and extent of restrictions vary around the UK.

In total, at least 16,600,000 people are in local lockdowns in the UK - about one in four people.

This includes:

  • 12,400,000 people in England, or 22% of the population
  • 1,900,000 people in Wales (60%) - but from Thursday that will rise to 2.3m (73%)
  • 1,900,000 people in Scotland (32%)
  • Currently, 65% of northern England faces restrictions and 22% of the Midlands.

Covid: 170 test positive at Cornwall meat plant

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-54361824

500 staff at Pilgrim's Pride in Pool, near Camborne, were tested in a contact tracing exercise by the NHS. Most of those who tested positive were unaware they had Covid-19 and were not displaying symptoms*. They and those they have been in close contact with are isolating in line with government guidelines, said Cornwall Council.

Cases of Covid-19 in the South West are still below the national average, latest figures show. Cornwall remains the area in the region with the highest number of cases.
This exercise illustrates the need for ongoing proactive testing - until that is implemented (or an effective vaccine developed and applied nationwide) 80% of those infected with COVID-19 will display no symptoms and so continue making contacts with , and possibly infecting, others in their environment.

The government's "promise" of 500,000 tests a day will not even make dent in the requirement for proactive testing:

https://www.itv.com/news/2020-09-21/...port-announced

Health secretary Matt Hancock revealed the priority list for coronavirus tests.

  • First in line for a test will be those either working in acute clinical care, or those due to receive it
  • Second will be care home workers and residents
  • Third on the list are NHS staff, including GPs and pharmacists
  • Fourth is targeted testing for outbreak management and surveillance studies
  • Fifth on the list are teaching staff with symptoms
  • Last in line is the general public when they have symptoms and those in "in areas of high incidents" will be prioritised

Hi

People are not being sensible.

We have an outbreak at the local infants school.

Parents are not socially distancing, gathering in groups when waiting outside to collect the kids,

Being sensible would prevent more local lockdowns.

Stricter measures on social mixing to be introduced in Liverpool, Warrington, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-54362119
Matt Hancock confirms the new rules for the Liverpool City Region, Warrington, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough are as follows:
  • Recommendation against all social mixing between people in different households
  • Regulations to be brought in to prevent social mixing between different households anywhere apart from outdoor public spaces such as parks and outdoor hospitality settings
  • Recommendation people should not attend professional or amateur sporting events as spectators
  • Recommendation people only visit care homes in "exceptional circumstances"
  • And guidance against all but essential travel, such as going to work or school

There are no changes to measures to West Yorkshire, West Midlands, Leicester, Lancashire or the rest of Greater Manchester, the health secretary says.

Of course. I have always believed that covidiots are the root cause of the spread and consequent increases in numbers infected.

I'm afraid it is difficult to teach common sense. You either have it or you don't.

Ideally, the covidiots' misbehaviour would eventually kill them all off, leaving us sensible people unaffected!
