Brexit deal mentions Netscape browser and Mozilla Mail

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-55475433

References to decades-old computer software are included in the new Brexit agreement, including a description of Netscape Communicator and Mozilla Mail as being "modern" services.

Experts believe officials must have copied and pasted chunks of text from old legislation into the document.

The references are on page 931 of the trade deal, in a section on encryption technology.

It also recommends using systems that are now vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

The text cites "modern e-mail software packages including Outlook, Mozilla Mail as well as Netscape Communicator 4.x."

The latter two are now defunct - the last major release of Netscape Communicator was in 1997.

Some detail, some deal .....

Mozilla (stylized as moz://a) is a free software community founded in 1998 by members of Netscape.

I suspect it is only the writing that needs updating. Various departments must be using later software because Netscape isn't around now. In fact, it would be quite a job to try and keep using Netscape or early e-mail software.

To be fair Firefox is just the latest iteration of Netscape Communicator. A rose by any other name...

Who cares what text is used in the documents or if it is recycled from previous documents , I don't .

We are out of the EU and free to make our own decisions and future and that is all that matters.

The UK government has not yet responded to the BBC's request for comment.

If the text that was written years ago still applies, no reason not to copy/paste it. It was the latest software at the time of writing is all.

It's a bit like a road rule that was written at the time of Morris Minors or Ford Escorts. The rule is still good but the cars it applies to are more modern.

Using outdated information as references may be acceptable for amateurs but, surely, professionals were employed to compile "The EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement" ..... or perhaps not .....
