Poverty and smart phones

Just watching a programme called Snake Catcher
Some tattooed man and his lady catch poisonous snakes.
So they were hunting and caught a black Mamba that had been terrorising a very poor and primitive rural community in Africa .
The houses were tin shacks about 12 ft x12 ft

They brought out the caught snake to show the villagers and immediately they -the villagers all whipped out their SMART PHONES aNd started snapping !
Even the little old village ladies had their smart phones!

Astounding !

Re: Poverty and smart phones

We found many people in Russia who were living in poverty who had phones. It was quite simple, really. The cost of having a cell phone was more inexpensive than land line charges. Everything was black market so while it was inexpensive service was sketchy and sporadic.

Cell phone can work as cameras even when they don't have cell coverage. All you need is a little electricity.

The United Nations considers access to the internet is a human right.

What a Guttenberg moment we are living in!

If they didn't have their smart phones, they would all fall over.

Re: Poverty and smart phones

Many places in India and China got smart phones before they ever got landlines; there still aren't any landlines in places like Africa but there is mobile coverage.

There are a lot of Brits who plead poverty but have smart phones.

I think I heard on the radio that there are more people in the world who have a cell phone then have a toilet

Re: Poverty and smart phones

A lot of people get them free, my pal has a year old phone yet she could never afford to buy one. Her daughter is working and gets her phones new and free from the shop, depending on how much your monthly contract payment is sets what phones you can have, the more your contract is the better phones you can pick from. When the yearly contract is up you pick another phone and a new contract, the year old phone is now yours and some people sell them on Ebay others give them to family members or friends. My friend has a Sim Only Contract at £8 per month and an almost new iPhone to run it on. Simple..

It just proves how mobile phones have taken over the world and become a priority to many.

There's lots of Brits who plead poverty but have clothes. What's wrong with having a smartphone if you are poor?

They are essential for contacting the DWP, the council, homeless services etc. plus as a diary, alarm, calendar inter alia.
