Re: EVs wont solve uk's congestion problems?

EVs are irrelevant when we consider congestion.

One solution would be to improve public transport.

Buses are slow and unreliable; trains are very expensive and unreliable.

Surely, that demonstrates what needs to be done.

Even if public transport were to be improved, I don't think for a minute that car numbers will reduce. Bearing in mind that our councils are succeeding in making town centres unattractive (access and parking), and more and more people are choosing to shop at out-of-town supermarkets, cars will still be essential for the foreseeable future.

Another option would be to improve existing roads and build more of them. Some people complain that if roads are widened and more roads are built we would lose too much of our countryside. Look at Google Maps and see just how little area roads actually occupy. Compare maps of the UK and Germany and see the difference when it comes to motorways and major trunk routes.

Then there is the problem of constant and ubiquitous road works. These certainly cause a great deal of congestion in my experience. They are uncoordinated, slow in progress, and cones are left in place when and where no work is being done.

Re: EVs wont solve uk's congestion problems?

When EV's become cheaper and more popular as a consequence, the government will find other ways to screw the motorists as revenues from petrol and diesel fall. Remember being `encouraged` (read conned) by one Gordon Brown to buy diesel vehicles because of their fuel economy? Price of diesel went up to cover the loss of petrol sales and they're still way above petrol prices today so what have you saved? Bugger all. Fast forward a few years and because of the green lobby your nice, fuel efficient diesel has lost it's resale/part exchange value even though, because of particulate filters and extremely low CO emissions they are a lot cleaner than petrol driven vehicles.

The same thing will happen with EVs - some way will be found to increase the cost of their use perhaps by charging high prices at charging points or paying vast sums to dispose of the batteries.

Exactly!

Nothing changes. A thousand years ago, the Sheriff and his men would come round every month demanding taxes, which they would decide the amount to suit themselves.
