Plastic Notes

So plastic washable £5 and £10 notes are to be introduced – brings a whole new meaning to “Money laundering”.

Re: Plastic Notes

I thought we were supposed to be minimising the use of plastics?

It won't matter much to me as I rarely use cash nowadays.

Re: Plastic Notes

My only qualms about 'plastic' notes is whether they fold as good as the existing ones to enable you to stuff 'em in your pockets as i do now.

Re: Plastic Notes

Assuming they won't last forever how will they be destroyed, currently they burn notes but plastic tends to be less easy to get rid of I think.

Re: Plastic Notes

They are being issued to help with counterfeiting - but like someone said, I rarely use cash now either.
They are supposed to last longer too but how will they be disposed of? Melted down and re-used?

Re: Plastic Notes

What I don't understand is, given all the hype about global warming and what we're doing to the atmosphere, why would they produce polymer plastic notes given that the production cycle will release some of the most hazardous toxins into the atmosphere:

This study has identified hazardous substances used in polymer production for which the risks should be evaluated for decisions on the need for risk reduction measures, substitution, or even phase out.
