Re: National Service

Our Sgt. called us all the names under the sun and I thought the RAF was supposed to be a Gentlemans outfit.

Re: National Service

Sorry too young. I even avoided the CCF at school. No jumped up Vth former was going to tell me what to do.

I did enjoy the school assault course though-well I was young and fit back then. The only disadvantage of not joining the CCF was not being allowed on the firing range-pity cos I had a good eye.

Get some in?-whitewash stones?-I bet it was loads of fun-not

Am I hurting you?-I should be, I`m standing on your hair,-get it cut

Never confuse an officer with a Sargeant dear boy-the evil one made sergeant in the RAF and he was a right nasty piece of work.

My Uncle who was only an LAC2 was a nice bloke though

Re: National Service

My husband was one of the last to do compulsory national service - he went into the RAF and he says he had a great time and enjoyed it - taught him self discipline and made him grow up into a self reliant person. He thinks it would be worth re-introducing it. Anyone else think so.

Re: National Service

My brother also completed his National Service not long before it was stopped. He was sent to Cyprus on active service in the late 50's.

I would like to see it brought back, many of today's youth would benefit immensely from it......

My surname being at the wrong end of the alphabet made me the second last of the national service intake and we were told that it would not be an easy ride because no others were following us.

I say bring it back and teach the young ones some discipline, how to respect others as well as putting some pride into their lazy backsides.

Re: National Service

Even the forces have changed now and its quite specialised I wouldn't fancy one of the rabble defending us. Although I do think there should be national service type camps for those who won't work, to make them realise the country and world doesn't owe them anything, its up to them to contribute.

Absolutely . . it gave young lads an incentive to excel in life and also taught them respect . . reintroducing NS for two years service would also lower the unemployment figures drastically . . in the hard times to come with the proposed budget cuts it'd be a good idea IMO.
