Windmills of Your Mind composer Michel Legrand dies aged 86

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-47013214

French Oscar-winning composer and jazz pianist Michel Legrand has died in Paris aged 86, his spokesman has said.

During a career spanning more than 50 years, Legrand wrote over 200 film and TV scores, as well as songs.

In 1968, he won his first Oscar for the song The Windmills of Your Mind from The Thomas Crown Affair film.

Two more Oscars followed in 1971 and 1983 for the best original scores in Summer of '42 and Yentl films respectively.

Legrand - who was known for his often jazz-tinged music - collaborated with such stars as Miles Davies, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and Edith Piaf among others.
An accomplished and prolific composer, Legrand wrote some of my favourite film scores, including:

The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)
Ice Station Zebra (1968)
The Swimming Pool (La Piscine) (1968)
Le Mans (1971)
Brian's Song (1971)
Lady Sings the Blues (1972)
Ode to Billy Joe (1976)
Atlantic City (1980)

Great music for great films.

I have had my PVR set up for over a year waiting to record the Thomas Crown Affair on Freeview the moment it comes on as its one of my wife's favourite films. I love both the original and teh remake personally.

The music score is brilliant.

We seem to have had a golden age of such film scores and I'm not sure we will see it again.

I remember going to a Matt Munroe tribute act on a cruise once and was just staggered at how many songs I knew and how widely used his music was.

From Russia With Love
Born Free
On Days Like these from The Italian Job

and so on

Something about Legrand's Windmills Of Your Mind has a curious hold TBH. The moment you hear it you are transported back to an earlier age, the 60s/70s and all that went with it. It puts you in mind of similar quirky and instantly recognisable songs like:

Everybody's Talkin At me (Harry Nilssen)

Where Do You Go To My Lovely (Peter Sarstedt)

Witchita Lineman (Glen Campbel)

It was an era of musical revolution the like of which I doubt we will ever see again.

I would never recognise him by name but I certainly recognise his music.

Over50sForum - Posting a YT video

Posting a YT video really isn't complicated, this is how I remember to do it...

Go to Youtube and click on the word share under the video

... and a code will appear like this...

https://youtu.be/vclCPTI2qGU

...now cut and paste everything after the be/ into your post like this...

vclCPTI2qGU

...now you need to add the 'open' and 'closed' youtube gates in front of and behind the code, these without the spaces in the gates...

[yt ]vclCPTI2qGU[/yt ] ...note the closed gate has a slash
