Weekly Covid cases in England up to highest level since June

https://inews.co.uk/news/health/coro...rs-trip-626665

The number of positive coronavirus test results in England has reached its highest weekly number since the start of June, according to latest figures.

A total of 6,732 new people tested positive for Covid-19 in the week to 26 August, an increase in 6 per cent from the previous week, Test and Trace data showed.

The figure marks the highest weekly number of positive cases since the week to 3 June, when people across the UK were still living under lockdown restrictions.
1735 tested positive yesterday, double the number of a month ago - the trend is upward:

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/

Meanwhile, a total of 73,081 people who tested positive for Covid-19 in England have had their cases transferred to the NHS tracing system since its launch earlier this year.

Of this total, 57,368 people (78.5%) were reached and asked to provide details of recent contacts while 13,958 (19.1%) were not reached.

A further 1,755 people (2.4%) could not be reached during the 28 May to 26 August period because their communication details had not been provided.

The data shows that 270,559 close contactsof people who have tested positive for coronavirus have now been reached through the scheme and asked to self‑isolate. This total is 79.7% out of a total of 339,635 people identified as close contacts. The remaining 69,076 people (20.3%) were identified as close contacts but were not reached.
There's a figure in those statistics that's rarely mentioned - the 339,635 people identified as close contacts of people who have tested positive for coronavirus asked to self‑isolate.

Presumably, many of those contacts have families who will have to adopt isolation protocols, too .....

They have to make hospitals covid safe. The minute a staff member tests positive for Covid they are back to square one.

It seems that there will be over 2,000 new cases today - so far:

Hi

People are dying because of this, others are having life changing conditions because of delays in treatment.

I find your lack of empathy and concern for others most disturbing.

I would also point out that whilst you have not been affected financially, many others have, losing money and their businesses and facing financial ruin.

I read a different perspective on these Corvid figures, and I must say this made sense to me.

Quote:

" A leading Oxford professer has said that there is no second wave of Covid - and that the rise in cases is down to more testing.

"The odds of catching Covid in England are about 44 in a million a day, Office for National Statistics data shows.
There are between 1200 and 4200 new infections daily.

"Professer Carl Heneghan from the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine said: "We are seeing a sharp rise in the number of healthy people who are carrying the virus but exhibiting no symptoms. Almost all are young.
They are being spotted because finally, a comprehensive test and trace system is in place."
He said ministers needed to send a clear message that the risk of catching the cirus is low."

Unquote.

What do you think? Have there been many more cases of Covid amongst us all along, but we are only finding out now because of testing?

It's a valid viewpoint but not the whole story.

Government esting and tracing is still not as effective as it should be (IMO, a shambles - see my posts on the subject) but the recent intervention by local councils has extended the coverage dramatically and hence discovered more cases.

But, worldwide, every relaxation of lockdown has led to a surge of new cases, often amongst the 18-40 age group, as people rush to socialise - this, of course, happening in the UK.

New cases, though, are only recorded cases. IIRC, 80% of those infected with the virus will experience and display no symptoms so may not be tested, even if contacted.

Until widespread antibody testing is implemented, nobody knows how many people have already had COVID-19.

In the UK, there have been 344,000 recorded cases of COV-ID-19. As the current rate of recorded cases increases to 2,000 a day then 250,000 new cases will have been recorded by Xmas. That's a lot, but if nationwide antibody testing doubles or triples those figures that's an awful lot.
