Opening a new bank account

Just had a strange conversation with a bank we wish to open an account with, apparently they can open an account for us if we are in receipt of benefits, a local grant or pension, but working and not having a passport means we have to ask the bank manager to make a special dispensation to open an account.

We have money, DDs going back many years were born here, have utility bills in our names and have lived in the same home since 1989 but can't prove we are citizens so might not be allowed to open an account.

All very odd, do other countries have these bizarre rules ?

Re: Opening a new bank account

I think i had to show my Passport , when we transfered from one Bank to another .
Had to have a certain amount going in each month too.

I tried opening an account at The Post office last month wanted to keep my Pension in a seprate account and thought with having a PO where i live it would be ideal .But i was told at the counter to wait till i hear from the Pension office and they will send me a form to fill in !!
I didnt want to stand there asking the obvious question ,so left disgusted ..

My OH not got a Passport ,so having a photo driving license
was what he had to show plus utility bills ..
It is getting harder to open Bank accounts , I think its to do with Money Laundering ..
Selling property you now have to show a Passport..

I don't have one either, I guess it wasn't needed years back when I opened my account

Things usually change because of criminal activity

Still got my old paper driving licence so that was no help apparently. I can't quite see why we have birth certificates any more because apparently they are not needed at all.

It would pay you to get a passport now ,costs are going up all the time .
And when it comes to you selling you will have one to prove who you are

Re: Opening a new bank account

Funny how when they took the money from us to buy this portion of the property all I had to prove was how much I earned.

Really we are being punished because others are criminals
