Re: Traditional 60w bulbs, the end in sight.

We replaced all our incandescent bulbs with energy saving ones via free offers from E O N, British Gas, Tesco etc. Keep a look out for offers as there will be some coming before winter starts.
The largest wattage in the energy saving range is 30 watts but energy saving bulbs can not claim to be the equal to wattage of incandescent bulbs due to a E U directive.

Thanks AB, that's useful to know...

I heard about the offers AB but there were none around here. My sister in Derbyshire got some...

I am off in the morning to Handyman House to stock up on old style bulb before they are all gone.

Don't know what my husband put in the toilet light socket but I am in and out before it's eventually brightened up.

Is that really a fact that they can't claim the real wattage, seems so counterproductive; people need to know how much light is really emitted by these things. Here in the States the ads say that 30 watts of the new ones equal 120 watts of incandescent bulbs.

Re: Traditional 60w bulbs, the end in sight.

A brief guide:-

The lumen equivalents of incandescent bulbs are:

* 100W incandescent bulb = 1,300-1,400 lumens
* 75W incandescent bulb = 920-970 lumens
* 60W incandescent bulb = 700-750 lumens
* 40W incandescent bulb = 410-430 lumens
* 25W incandescent bulb = 220-230 lumens

To chose which Energy saving bulb (CFL)to buy remember that they use about a fifth of the wattage to produce the same luminems. ie, 60 watt incandescent needs to be replaced by a 11 watt CFL, 100 watt incandescent by 25 watt CFL.

AB thank you but that is way beyond my comprehension I never was any good at maths. I just stick a bulb in and hope I can see by the light it produces

Oh dear, why are things getting more complicated as you get older? I have no idea what bloomin' lumens are, AB - but I'll make a note of 100w = 25w and 60w = 11w (that's easier to remember!). Also, those are the two I use most

They don't work well with dimmer switches either. We were going through bulbs all the time until a family member who is a sparks told us they were not compatible so he changed the switches for ordinary ones and they have been fine since. Another example of progress not being all its cracked up to be.
