Boiler Service

I have been fishing around for a new plumber/gas engineer this year as the chap I usually have, left me with a gas leak when her serviced the boiler, plus 2 water leaks when he put a new radiator in!

I was surprised to discover how much prices vary even between local workmen. I had quotes varying between £55 - £90. It's the same flippin' boiler and the same service, so why so much price difference?

Do you have your boiler serviced every year, and how much do you get charged?

Re: Boiler Service

I've just had a new boiler fitted which comes with a 7 year warranty but I will have to pay £50 for the annual service.

I did have breakdown cover with Scottish Power for the old boiler for £16 per month which included an annual service.

Re: Boiler Service

We have a contract with British gas £15 a month for boiler and controls, if the radiators go we have to pay for that ourselves.

Re: Boiler Service

We have a coal effect gas fire with a gas boiler behind it. The last service for the two cost £110 and that's cut price because our grandson works for the firm.

Re: Boiler Service

I had my boiler (outdoor oil-fired) serviced two years ago. It had developed a pressure leak and some of the valves / air bleeds were knackered. It hadn't been fully serviced since new (7 years previous), but the heating man said that it was just about due for a service and doing it every year was a waste of time and money.

A full service, safety check and all the parts were about £150. Efficiency was checked at 92%. Back at work, the maintenance man who looks after the gas boilers said that if they work and are safe, he leaves them alone.

Re: Boiler Service

Nothing OH does it .. He is a fully trained gas installer.

If you are looking for a firm the corgi or gas regestration is required but check if they have public liability insurence..

That means if they do muck up or damage your house you have a chance of getting costs from them ..Cowboys wont have it and good companies try to ensure they get as few claims as possible by doing the work right in the first place.

Re: Boiler Service

I pay southern electric / gas £15 per month . I get a yearly service and call outs . I've only had them twice but feel the payment is worth it . I've had bad workmanship and gas fitters who haven't turned up and left me in the lurch , so I will continue with southern electric .

Re: Boiler Service

I wonder if there's much difference in servicing costs between oil & gas boilers? Since we don't have mains gas here, oil fired boilers are the norm.
The most common ones are made by Grant and are often of the outdoor type, so no noise.

Re: Boiler Service

Took me time to find one who was good.
I just give him £50 to service the boiler and
it works OK.
His only problem with coming to my house is
he is frightened of one of my cats. We have to
escort him upstairs to the bathroom. My cat
or should I say dog as that's what he thinks it
is. He is a massive cat but wouldn't hurt a fly
so makes me laugh to see this 6,' 2" guy
frightened of a 8 and a half kilo cat.
