Re: Meanwhile in Switzerland....
A majority of Swiss people do not want to deny residents of the European Union free access to their country. According to an online poll published on Sunday among 11,000 Swiss citizens, 58% are against the plan to end the free movement of EU citizens.
Under the leadership of the People's Party, the radical right in Switzerland launched a campaign to end the free movement of people from outside the EU. The Swiss can speak about this in a referendum in May.
The referendum reflects the Swiss discomfort with the influx of foreigners. A quarter of the population is now foreigner. Stopping free movement for EU citizens would, however, violate the agreements that guarantee Switzerland free access to the European market. That is the lifeblood of the Alpine country.
However, they have a new trade agreement with the UK covering €31 bn in goods and services. The loss of an agreement with the EU, covering almost € 480 bn, should not bother the swiss.
