Wrong...

Nato commitments have always been 2% of gdp. The 2014 commitment to increase them (by those countries defaulting on their promises) was because of Russia's intervention in the Ukraine and you all shit your pants over it.

Then trump came along and pointed it out again

Many true words are spoken in jest.

I believe that the Netherlands, along with several other EU nations (actually, the majority of them) are not paying the agreed 2% of GNP because they don't need to!

They are happy to sit back and hide behind us and especially the US. They were happy to rely on us seventy years ago and are still doing so.

Trump has made his opinion on this mater well known and it wouldn't surprise me if he, some time in the future, decides to exclude from his military support those countries failing to contribute the agreed levels.

I'm not claiming that the UK carries any weight in this respect. After all, consecutive governments have pared our armed forces to the bone. However, I have a distinct feeling that if push came to shove, the US would stand by us in preference to certain EU countries. After all, we have been allies ever since their independence.

Consider this as well. Off all European countries, the UK provides more support to the US than any other. Military bases, the BMEWS at Fylingdales, the Menwith Hill communications station, GCHQ, etc, etc. America would happily leave any EU support in favour of ours.

A little misunderstanding on your side. In 2014 it was agreed to spent 2% gdp by 2024. A traject of growing to that 2% was set out by most countries.
Along comes trump and surprises everyone with his accusation the 2% should long been reached. Let's just say it is trump. What can you expect from a lunatic?

Consider this as well. Suppose trump indeed withdraws in 2020 from nato, in favour of his great buddy poetin, who in the russian eyes presents a military factor to be eradicated first, EU or UK?

NATO defence commitments have always been 2%

Your re-writing treaties again

If the USA pulls out of NATO the first EU member states to go would be the ones that used to be part of the Soviet union when Putin invades them just like he did with Crimea . Why else do you think they pay their share if NATO contributions ?

Yes, and those who don't pay their whack sit safely (they think) hiding behind the payers.
Typical of the Cloggies.

Still (!) haven't discovered the difference between nato contributions and the 2% expenditure on defence?

You are talking about the situation usa has withdrawn from nato. Poetin's russia invades, e.g. poland.
The principle of nato is that if one member is attacked, the other members consider that a hostile act against them. So if poland is invaded, mighty britain with its strong army, will retalliate.
Knowing that, when poetin is considering invading poland, what is the country he will wipe out first?

In your dreams. The 2% goal was set by NATO leaders at a 2014 summit, months after Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula. That is a historic fact.
