Mine is "soft-wired" (see attached) but Halfords (for example) will hardwire your dashcam for £30.

Mine is also 'soft wired', although in my case I ran the cable to the boot, where there is another plug. That leaves the one at the front for other uses.
I can't remember whether the cable that came with my camera was long enough or whether I joined another length myself (probably just using insulating tape - electricians would frown at this point!).

Mine, incidentally, is a RoadHawk. I have had it for centuries and it is still working perfectly.

Mine too - the recommended path was as you illustrated but it seemed a lot of fuss to me so I just draped the wire over the mirror and straight down to the power socket (along with the wire for the GPS)

Thanks again Omah, I think I will go down the Halfords route.

When I think of our motorways, full of potholes and permanently lined with cones I think to myself, wouldn't it be nice if we could have motorways like those Australian ones?

Re: Dash Board Camera

IMO

It is inadvisible to buy dashcams like chunky Nextbase products. You are effectively strapping a digital camera to your dashboard which is just going to attract the attention of thieves. You would not leave a Sat Nav stuck to your windscreen so you would be foolish to leave a camera too. Sat Navs have been one of the top reasons for car break-ins these past few years. Dashcams will quickly replace this trend imo.

So you are then left with 2 realistic options. One is to keep using chunky Nextbase type dashcams and then have to keep taking it out and re-positioning it every time you leave the car. That is cumbersome, an inconvenience and not really much of a solution.

The other option is to buy a DISCRETE dashcam that is either;

a) So small that constantly removing it and carrying it around in your pocket is no inconvenience at all or is

b) fully integrated into the car such that ONLY the actual lens is visible and all other parts are hidden say inside the mirror housing.

This narrows down the choices significantly. I personally favour option B which is why I am interested in the Mobius Actioncam. You can buy special extension leads that allow you to open up the tiny unit and separate the lens from the main circuitry. Thus you can drill a tiny hole in the mirror/rain sensing housing (on most cars) and put the lens there whilst then putting the rest inside the housing.

Alternatively the Mobius is tiny enough (see prev pictures) to simply install on the dashboard itself using the supplied docking unit so that you can then remove it every time you leave the car and slip it into a pocket. With this option you can just dangle the cable straight down the middle of the dash to your cigarette lighter socket. Nothing for thieves to see or nick plus you'll have a HD video camera in your pocket to record anything you happen to see whilst you are walking around.

Although satnav theft is, apparently, common, I have never heard of dashcam theft.

Depending upon where I leave my car, I leave the dashcam attached to the windscreen. However, in 'less salubrious' areas I remove it and hide it within the car. It can be removed or reattached within a few seconds.

It has never been stolen.

Re: Dash Board Camera

The thing to remember with dash cams is , they have a built in event recorder, this records an event such as a rear end shunt, although you may not have any footage as the camera is pointing forwards, it will register that an event happened and will record , the time that it happened, your speed, your location(GPS) and the severity of the impact ( motion sensor) this will automatically be logged on the SD card, all can be used in the event of an insurance claim, just make sure the dashcam your buying has this some dont
