Many Narrowboat Hire companies allow clueless, completely inexperienced, unqualified holidaymakers to take charge of a 70ft long, steel hulled Narrowboat weighing up to 25 tons with the bare minimum of instruction. It's like giving an unlicensed driver the keys to an articulated lorry.

I agree with you there, we lived near a lock on the Basingstoke canal, saw many very near misses people who had no idea how to safely use the lock, one barge almost went under when they were too close to the water rushing in. Others didn't close the lock after themselves leaving it to others to sort out the hazard.

That's a 30 ton motoryacht travelling at about 25knots......those swimmers wouldn't stand a chance.

I believe the skipper got 4 years jail.

That's good to hear sadly many get away with putting others in danger though.

A 25 ton steel boat travelling at 4mph (the usually recommended speed) can do an awful lot of damage to the boat, other boats or locks:

This boat got caught on the lock sill and sank in 25seconds.

Re: Death on Loch Lomond.

It's really hard work muddy all that leaping from boat to tow path and the locks are pretty heavy to open and close. Not really suitable unless you are quite fit and able.
