Then the real training starts.
Yes, Mups it is. They have to socialise the pups too.

As long as dogs are trained using positive reinforcement methods PR (and never punishment, teach required behaviour and reward) training is not cruel and I understand guide Dogs are trained using PR methods these days.
'Using' a Guide Dog is not cruel , a dog with a purpose and treated with kindness and understanding should be a happy and fulfilled dog unlike those dogs who spend a lot of time alone with their minds under used.
Well said!

Re: Is it cruel to train and use guide dogs

It always amazes me how Labradors can be trained as safe dogs as some are so ill behaved they would run straight under a juggernaut in pursuit of a crisp packet !
I see so many badly behaved dogs out at times .
Today I passed a couple whose smallish staffie took exception to my blameless dog and practically wrenched them off their feet snarling and snapping . Not a word of reproach passed their lips and it made me wonder how they brought up their kids .
The dog hauled them off down the road and we mused on what possible pleasure could be gained walking a pet that dragged your arms out and wanted to have a dust up with every other passing dog.

We have a Staffie/Patterdale, she is good when out and generally ignores other dogs whist off the lead. I have learnt not to be concerned when someone else's dog (also off the lead) comes bounding up to her, snapping will ensue, she likes her own space.

If another dog is on the lead, when I tell her to stay, she does.

To me they look bored or resigned with the weight of the world on their shoulders.
Must be one of my past lives

I don’t think it’s right to use guide-dogs or any animals to serve our needs.
Ok, let the avalanche of comments begin - and go!

Dogs love to work, you only have to watch them, sheep dogs, police dogs, sniffer dogs, dogs who help disabled people & guide dogs in fact any dog who has a job to do. It all started many years ago when man tamed wolves to help them guard & keep them warm. The dogs of this world would all be happier if they were all trained properly even the domestic pet dog, too many people have dogs & don't train them to be family pets.

My SiL bought my brother a Rottie as a 50th birthday prezzie. He took the dog to training classes but she was as thick as a brick apparently and the trainer sacked them both!
