Windows 10 - KB4511555 Cumulative Update Causing Problems

In my case, the task bar search box has become inactive and is therefore unusable. Additionally, Cortana has grabbed 33% of the CPU and 300 MB of memory.

An "sfc / scannow" indicates corrupted files .....

This is a known problem - as yet, AFAIK, there is no means of rectification/circumvention:

I am currently on OS build 18362.329, after (supposedly) successfully updating to KB4511555. Shortly thereafter, I noticed that the search box located on the taskbar has stopped working. The service is not disabled, mind. It was also functioning normally before the update. After running the SFC /scannow command, it claimed that “some files were corrupted, but could not be repaired.” This did not occur prior the update.

My experience too.

Actually I thought something was wrong with my computer immediately before this update because it wouldn't turn off, it just kept going to the log in screen. In fact it was the system telling me to, "...bugger off I am busy doing something important". By the morning a couple of these cumulative updates had been installed (KB4511555 and KB4512941) and all was sweetness and light again.

Re: Windows 10 - KB4511555 Cumulative Update Causing Problems

Everything is OK as far as I can tell after installing KB4511555 and KB4512941.

I don't normally have the search box showing but turned it on for testing purposes and it is working OK.

I usually have the icons on the Taskbar set to 'Use small taskbar buttons'. With this preference, the search box doesn't show anyway. Just click the Windows icon and start typing to search.

Re: Windows 10 - KB4511555 Cumulative Update Causing Problems

Ok maybe this will help

I tried a program yesterday and it mucked up my computer. So I went onto restore to an earlier version of windows 10.
However it did not go back to an earier verson but reprogrammed the latest version saving files etc

After the restore I had to manually download my printer- photo editing suite- avast antivirus- Revo uninstaller- and malwarebytes which didn't take that long.

was it worth it? well all i can say is any bugs or slowing down the computer has gone, intenet sites are there almost before I hit the button.

Re: Windows 10 - KB4511555 Cumulative Update Causing Problems

Update - Blame Change:

Windows 10 KB4512941 (Build 18362.329) is causing high CPU usage

https://www.windowslatest.com/2019/0...igh-cpu-usage/

Windows 10 KB4512941 fixes the broken Windows Sandbox, black screen issue hitting Remote Desktop connections and several other bugs. However, some users have run into serious problems after installing the latest update that advances PCs to Build 18362.329.

According to various reports on forums (1, 2) and Feedback Hub, a number of devices may startup with a high CPU usage problem, degrading the overall performance of the systems. The culprit appears to be a botched version of Cortana that the firm has reportedly shipped in this release.

The Cortana (SearchUI.exe) process is generating CPU usage spikes for some users and the process has recorded a bump of around 30-40 percent in Task Manager, though the usage depends on the number of cores a processor has.

Testers reported the problem

It’s important to note that Microsoft actually tested KB4512941 with Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Ring for more than a week before shipping the update to the general public.

According to some posts on Feedback Hub, reports of high CPU usage were submitted multiple times by testers earlier this week, but the reports appear to have been ignored because they weren’t upvoted enough.

Re: Windows 10 - KB4511555 Cumulative Update Causing Problems

I tried a couple of Registry "fixes" that are 'out there' but neither worked saisfactorily, so I've uninstalled KB4512941, rebooted and checked the result - Cortana CPU usage back to 0 and local search working OK .....

Re: Windows 10 - KB4511555 Cumulative Update Causing Problems

Microsoft says it will "provide an update in an upcoming release."

https://www.windowscentral.com/micro...date-kb4512941

Microsoft is now investigating a bug in the latest optional cumulative update for Windows 10, KB4512941.

The bug is causing CPU usage to spike for some users, and it's related to SearchUI.exe.

There's no official fix as of yet, but Microsoft says it will "provide an update in an upcoming release."

Re: Windows 10 - KB4511555 Cumulative Update Causing Problems

Microsoft To Fix Windows 10 ‘High CPU Usage’ Bug Caused By KB4512941

https://fossbytes.com/microsoft-to-f...-by-kb4512941/

September 9, 2019

Microsoft has updated its support page to acknowledge the issues that Windows 10 users have been facing because of a cumulative update KB4512941, released on August 30.

Some users complained about high CPU usage after installing the update and results not showing up in Windows Search. Microsoft says that these issues are related to SearchUI.exe and only occur for users who have disabled searching the web using Windows Search.

The company is working on a fix, and an update will be released sometime around the middle of September.

Ironically, KB4512941 is a non-security update released to prevent excessive CPU usage when a user jumps between apps or hovers over the Taskbar. Being an optional update, it didn’t automatically install on Windows 10 devices and so didn’t affect a huge number of users.
