An Island of Tranquility?

Do you think you are better off or is your standard of living declining?

Our Treasurer was on the radio this morning describing Australia's economy as an island of Tranquility compared to other OCED countries who are experiencing negative growth.

At 1.4%p.o. current growth is the lowest since the GFC, in fact the only bright spot was that the last quarter exports once again exceeded imports so we have a trade surplus.

Retail industry is suffering because it appears people have stopped spending because of the gloomy economic outlook though the latest quarter did not include the latest tax cuts which the government hopes will make people spend. Wages growth is only just ahead of inflation.

Is this the same situation where you live? Is trade and growth slowing or are prospects looking better? Do you feel confident about the future?

Quicker to fly ST. Not sure about "Island of Tranquility" but you could do a lot worse. However way you look at it Bruce I think we are all lucky that we live here. In the biggest of pictures I seriously do not think we have a hell of a lot to complain about.

You have to remember that is a politician's description when talking up the financial situation after the June quarter national accounts were released.

Personally we always wonder whats going on because as a family during the deepest recessions we tend to do better and when they say economy is rising high we are struggling and flailing around looking for the next penny. So I will just say we are OK at the moment not riding high but certainly not looking for pennies under the sofa cushions.

You are coming here and you want tranquil?..Better avoid Sydney then..and Melbourne..and Brisbane..and Gold Coast...and Perth. Adelaide and Hobart..yeah they're pretty tranquil..Oh and Canberra is nice this time of year..apart from the politicians. The killer kangaroos are OK now. They've surrendered all their guns. Spiders and snakes are still a worry.
