You must have attended the same dubious school of economics that Blair did Bruce....
Your comparison between Australia and the UK is a very poor one.....
In a country that is 32 times the size of the UK with a population of only 25 million and jam packed with natural resources, and a growing economy with many opportunities in mining precious metals, coal and other minerals, the smart money would be on imported labour.
The UK on the other hand, with a population of over 68 million and a diminishing economy after the re location of industry and manufacturing to foreign competitors, has not now got the job opportunities that Australia has.
Furthermore; I believe Australia is quite choosy and strict on the kind of labourer they admit to your country. The UK under the Blair administration handed out work permits and visas to anyone who applied for one.
By admitting migrants into a country to grow the domestic economy is assuming that every migrant would be walking straight into meaningful employment and contributing to the national purse. Well perhaps that was the case in Australia, because you made sure there was sufficient work for the skilled migrants, but certainly not in the UK when jobs were scarce, and because families accompanied the prospective working migrant, they would need healthcare and education for their young, so they actually detracted from the domestic economy.
Your theory about migration does not work in the UK Bruce; It's a bit like building a bigger engine (i.e the working population) to get more power, but then find it needs more fuel (public money and handouts) so a bigger engine has to built.....Catch 22 springs to mind...
