Happy Australia Day Bruce, I was there for a few months 30 odd years ago and I've been asking myself why the hell I came back ever since.

Don't worry it took me a return visit to realise which side my bread was buttered on. But it was the best decision I ever made, it is over 50 years since I first came here as a 19 year old on a £10 adventure.

No good, all those places are closed. Now they just shoo you back to where you came from. If you arrive by air you find yourself in places like Villawood which are basically just prisons and you end up owing the Australian government your very expensive return fare plus board and lodgings.

It's no fun being an asylum seeker these days.

The best way is to get a backpacker visa which allows you to stay for a couple of years in return for working in remote areas. Then you just disappear off the radar, there are 50000 illegals mostly British and American in Australia at any given time who have overstayed their visa.

Border Force never raids the backpacker hostels of Kings Cross so you are pretty safe
