Re: Borrowed me a ....

I think what really gets to me is I left school at 15 - these days they get far better and longer educations than I and many others did so why can they not construct a reasonable sentence ?

I have to say it doesn't bother me, and yes as long as I can make out what the message is it's OK with me, language and the climate have always changed since the first Ugg was muttered in frustration. Scientists have discovered that 'Ugg' was the first word to be used by man, it actually meant 'Food', tiny infants still use the word today when they get hungry, when they don't get the food they are expecting they get angry and the word extends to "Ugggggg', which means 'Angry'.

Does not bother me, on one forum a member was extremely Dyslexic, yet always managed to read and understand their posts,as for the Apostrophe Police

Re: Borrowed me a ....

I guess you have to also remember that many people of our age group and older did not get a good education and had to leave school very early or in some cases were just not very good at English, while they may have been good at other things.

We're not all equally blessed with either ability or inclination so we have to be a bit forgiving when people are different from us. I get annoyed with bad English too but then I stop and think of the all the students I had over 40 years of teaching English and I remember the ones who couldn't learn some things no matter how well they were taught and those whose interests were in other areas and just didn't have the will to learn and those who came from homes where there was no incentive to learn. And it's not so easy to catch up after you leave school as people might think.

Re: Borrowed me a ....

good point jaywalker - tolerance is the key word I believe - we often unconsciously demand from others the standards we have set for ourselves. I sometimes watch TV docos [I know I shouldn't abbreviate but it saves time!] of young English kids being interviewed and for me their spoken English is "appalling" but I cannot do anything about it and I'd rather try to communicate with them given the opportunity rather than turn away in disgust!

If you want to get upset about English then watch some of the late night USA chat shows - the English [Americanized] is to me abominable, but what can I do about apart from switch off the TV?
