What's the average wage these days?
Ah, now there is a question!
I've just googled it and it comes up as £26,500 per annum but apparently that's
wage or salary.
Trying to find the average INCOME for each social group is damn near impossible without extensive research by the look of it, and I looked at all kinds of data from the government too!
With our pensions and my part-time work we're still nowhere near £26,500 of course but that still doesn't mean much because according to the DWP we are not entitled to any government benefits.
A while back I tried to find out what the official poverty level is and eventually I turned to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation as government figures are far too complicated and / or misleading.
According to their 2011/12 data, the poverty threshold for a single adult was £128 a week., (£6,656).
For a couple with two children it was £357, (£18,564).
Obviously we are not a family of 4 so for simplicity's sake I calculated the single person income x 2 and it comes up as £13,312.
Well of course we are over that figure - so that's all right then!!!!
Seriously though, is it any wonder that so many people are so angry at benefits abusers like the OP stated when by simple manipulation of statistics, politicians wipe out virtually any mention or concerns about poverty in the UK at a stroke? stevmk2
