The problem with hydrogen is that it's LEL and UEL is something like 5% to 95% (LNG is 5% to 20%) - those figures are not exactly right being from memory but of the right order. It is used as a coolant in the power industry
In terms of energy efficiency electrolysis is the most effective means of producing hydrogen.

Nearly but not yet, Electrolysis of water is 70–80% efficient (a 20–30% conversion loss) while steam reforming of natural gas has a thermal efficiency between 70–85%
