Watching Rome Burn

This thread is as a sideshoot to one in which the use of drones and CCTV to survey matters came up, to which some people object.

When a bobby walks the beat, (s)he will be surveilling the comings and goings of those around him/her, keeping an eye out for persons of interest and acting as a deterrent and possibly giving pursuit if needs be, and able to call for assistance if required.

If the same bobby can sit in front of a set of monitors and is able to perform the same task over a far wider area, and have the technology to potentially ID miscreants via recognition software with the additional benefit of a recorded, er, record of events, then what's the difference and which is preferable?

Hi

CCTV is monitored, if at all, by civilian staff.

You need police, with powers of arrest ,to deal with crime on the ground.

If we were accustomed to bobbies on the beat walking through our house, uninvited, into our back gardens where we might be sunbathing naked, or worse, we probably wouldn't perceive much difference.

Hi

Somewhat disingenuous Harbal.

CCTV in a work environment is different.

'Monitoring' needs eyes and ears so CCTV and an alert Bobby walking the beat.

Correct I have done a bit of monitoring myself in one of my many jobs and got to see lots of badgers and foxes and a 'big cat'

Our town was very quiet at that time and some of the cameras were hidden in the street lights.

As a response to the post which it was in relation to, how is it "disingenuous"?

Indeed. Knowing where the crime has taken place and possibly by whom, with video evidence of the offence must surely be of some help.

Correct.

However, providing that police are available in the necessary numbers and able to proceed quickly to where needed, the two can work together very efficiently.

As I said on another thread on a similar topic today, I'd like to see far more security cameras high on the sides of buildings (out of reach of yobs and vandals) along with a restoration of police numbers decimated by that incompetent Treason May.
