Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

Wonderful video Solo, I’m a real “How it’s Made” fan and that was a special treat.
What a wonderful age the granny was God rest her.

When I worked in the Assay Office I used to hallmark the silver bands for Peterson’s Pipes, thousands of the bloody things, so boring, six months was enough for me in the Assay Office, testing precious metals and then stamping hundreds of cast and pressed out items every day was too routine for me, I had to get back out onto the bench making me own stuff again, I’m so glad I did, although I have to say they were great employers and the money was great too.

That looks a very pleasant place to have a long walk Spitty, on a normal nice Spring day such as today I would take the wife and the dog along the banks of the Royal Canal, then turn off at Ashtown and head into the “Halfway House” for a bite to eat and a quiet pint.
Is that a river or a canal in the photo’s? I’m guessing it’s a river.

This would be our usual starting off point along the canal, the three story grey building used to be a Rank's Flour Mill, barges supplied it from as far inland as Mullingar, indeed it's rumoured that the late famous Mullingar singer Joe Dolan first came to Dublin on a Rank's barge, he never looked back, a powerhouse of vocal energy he went on to international fame, Good on ya Joe, now step out me lad and give it a lash.

Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

Jem For anyone with an inventive mind that must have been sheer pergortory after awhile and I didn't realise that those silver bits had to be done specialist like...you live and learn

Spits and your photos show great places to walk dogs..spits walk especially reminds me of one of the walks I used to take years ago with our springer spaniel...a right daft b****r if ever there was one... where that building is.. our walk was a dye factory and at that time anything was allowed to drain away into a river so that water could contain any colour at any time ...and did.

Now all dogs love to swim and our mutt was no exception however when he goes in the river black and comes out bottle green it's hard to think up a story to account for that..or how he had got off his lead. Our dog didn't care...he'd had his swim but my Mother used to be mortified and I remember the purple took the longest to disappear but never fathomed out why.

Jem Your canal walk also reminds me of living on the house boat..the chi I had at the time loved diving off the gangplank and oddly enough the swans and cygnets took to him being amongst them with his doggy paddle...probably because they came to the gangplank for food and he would share with them...the moorhens were a bit standofish though...no doubt thinking he was some kind of wind up toy

All was well..and I think I mentioned this before about pike taken babies..until a huge pike made a grab for my tiny dog which made me realise how unsafe the water was for him. Had to put netting allong the gangway to keep him safe. Sad really.

I always thought Joe Dolan had a great quality voice but copied others instead of being original..if that makes sense. Many have done the same who deserved better and you wonder is it a trap they fall into just to make money !

This was on an Irish bar juke box which we all warbled to many times as you do after a few and far from home and although not original I do like him singing this one as it shows the range he was capable of...

Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

I think all canals had their own legendary monster pike, we had a "Big Mo" and a "Little Mo" in the Royal Canal, big Mo was supposed to be 70years old and was believed to have jumped out of the water and dragged a live donkey off the tow path. Can't say I ever saw either the big one or the little one.

Isn’t it strange the things that can happen when you least expect them to happen.

Yesterday as I was busy pottering around my work shed the wife comes out to me, I knew it was something unusual as she normally bangs on the kitchen window when she wants my attention.
God love her, she had a dreadful worried look on her face, one of the front teeth in her dentures had vanished leaving a very noticeable gap when she opened her mouth, she told me she had been munching on a granny smith apple and she thinks she swallowed the tooth with a chunk of apple.
I told her not to fret as the ceramic tooth would pass through her body harmlessly, and to her appearance she won’t be going out anywhere for a long time to come, besides I don’t know how many times I told her to get another set of teeth made in case of just such an emergency, sure I might as well be talking to the wall.
Anyway I said I would make a glass tooth for her and put it in, the only problem would be matching the colour, luckily I found a piece of off white glass from an Old Spice aftershave bottle, and with the tiny diamond tipped grinding and polishing bits I had at my disposal I fashioned out one beautiful tooth to match the rest perfectly and fixed it in for her.
Of course she had given me the dentures to work on so I wasn’t holding her over the bench screaming with her head hanging down backwards, that would be cruel.

She was over the moon and that made me a very happy man to be able to help her out.

I’m sure there must be many such incidences happening all over the place and with no dental mechanics open a lot of embarrassed people, but if that’s all one has to worry about one is doing fine, but lay off chopping into apples is my advice, or there’ll be an awful lot of hairy toothless hags and gits queuing up outside the dental mechanics when this is all over.

Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

Yee gawds man.. of all the things you had lying around surely the good wife deserved a silver or gold replacement toof...now that would really have been something to smile about rather than have a bit of old spice stuck in yer pallette...honestly.... men.

Psssst well done though for saving the day

I am not into a lot of the mawkish mush that gets put out at times like this and whilst there is some well meaning and clever mush most is just for self gratification which kind of takes the edge of the charity bit...and then in the middle of the mush there is always that little surprise gem that hopefully pops up out of the blue.... Well the old Stones have done just that and whether you like em or not you have to admire their get up and go

Although this song was written before Cov19 it does coinicide well with our present situation..and trust our elderly rockers to get it just right as always. No fanfare..no long so called meaningful boring dialogue explaining why they felt the need to write this song...and for whom..and for this..that..and the other...they have just let the song speak for itself thank gawd. Written some time ago..adapted in quarantine..recording...released and bang... the Stones strike again. Take note you all you young wannabees. That's the way to do it:

Nice one Pierres Qui Roulent, great R&B sound.

Was thinking about the accumulation of knowledge recently and, how some folks stop doing it at a certain point in time, when the realisation it is not possible to know everything hits home. I really feel for the guy in this advert.

Some folks post in a way somewhat cursory
Could be because they never had a Bursary
This could explain the state of constant terse-ary
Never mind that Friday weeks a Ten year Anniversary

Oh to have a bar of gold
To comfort me when I grow old
No use having a stash of cash
Euros are useless and go in a flash.

Oh to have a bar of candy
To comfort me when remembering Randy
No more cream to cure a rash
Isolate and smoke some Hash
