I do not carry a knife in an Urban Area, that is the difference.
When I lived in Prees, most people carried a knife on them, an essential tool in a Farming Community.
Nobody has ever been stabbed there.

When l was a boywe all had a pen knife or a jack knifeWhich never had a blade longer than three inches, indeed
it was illegal to sell or own a longer knife!
This changed later on, and was then legal to own a sheath
Knife, on which the blade was about seven inches long,
But in town this had to be carried in a leather sheath, ( hence
the name ) which was usually fitted to a trouser belt!
I dont know how the rules got changed but lthink if the
length of blade was limited to three inches again it would
make the likelihood of fatal injury much less and if the blade
had to fold into the handle as well it would help stop any
injury to the owner as well!
On the subject of kitchen knives they should be kept in
locked cabinets in the shop, and only sold to adults!
The kitchen knives in homes need to be better controlled
By the adults of the house
And of course we need more police!

There's no simple solution to the "social" use of blades. There's not enough prisons and those that we do have are mostly not places of punishment instead just places of incarceration.Personally I believe the idea that being incarcerated is punishment in itself is a load of dingoes kidneys especially when life inside is as "user friendly" wait is for most.
I'm no fan of America or "The American Way" but I do believe that when it comes to their prison system and regimes we have a lot to learn.
Except for capital punishment. IMO that is obscene but I am all in favour of corporal punishment for crimes against the person and for even carrying bladed weapons.
People carrying bladed weapons can only be communicated with in a language, often the ONLY language that they understand.

It's legal to carry a knife providing-
1. It's a folding knife and the blade cannot be locked open.
2. The "cutting" edge must not exceed 3"
You cannot carry a knife which does not adhere to the above "without good reason"
For example, if you're going camping (and can prove it) and found with a 7" fixed blade knife , that may be deemed "good reason".

I often carry a Hoof Pick in my jeans back pocket, not because I want to use it as a weapon but I would if I was attacked. I always have it with me if I'm out with the horses and I tend to forget about it in my pocket. The one on the jack knife was a 3 inch spike which
folded into the knife handle for safety!
