I think a slow return to cold war conditions will ensue, doubt USA will chance their arm against Russia as they could fight back. And look how less technology based countries have fared against them, seems there is conflict everywhere at the moment.

its my thinking the Russians have stirred this up,they,ve made threats to Ukraine ,they have took Crimea without much protest from the rest of the leading countries ,hard Sanctions should have been put in place straight away not a bit at a time ,If Russia takes Ukraine then where will it stop ..

Looking at it from the Russians point of view, if the Ukraine aligns itself with the west that's a buffer country lost to them. It's in their interest to keep them on the Russian side.

At the present moment Germany is importing 40% of all it's oil and gas supplies from Russia piped through the Ukraine and is now urgently seeking alternative sources. Many other European countries are similarly situated. If Europe were to stop buying Russian oil Putin would not last week .

Absolute rubbish!!! The 'West' needs Russia to continue supplying natural gas through the pipe-line, but the opposite is not true, Russia doesn't need the west, she could get all her raw materials from her own resources and establish trade deals with China and south-east asia.

Russia needs the revenue, it survives on it. America is now about to export fracked shale gas at prices below Russia's from a brand new facility on the Gulf of Mexico. When completed this one plant will have a capacity of 20 million tonnes per year, and for refrigerated and compressed gas that is a hell of a lot.

At the end of WWII when Russia annexed and Communised large swathes of Europe the west had a deep suspicion of them . However, since the end of the cold war, trust had been slowly returning and confidence that now they could be relied on as a stable trading partner and energy supplier, 30 years of repatriation that "Action Man" blew away in a month.

Countries like Germany are not going to do anything drastic to jeopardise their current energy supply situation but this reality check will be causing a lot a diversification plans to be actioned below the parapet.
