Charity Harassment!

Poppy collector Olive Cooke 'exhausted by charity requests'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-32748923

A 92-year-old woman found dead in the Avon Gorge last week had been "exhausted" by requests for money from different charities, a friend has said.
He said she was being sent 180 letters a month and was plagued by phone calls.
Her friend Mr Earley told BBC Radio Bristol that while he would not blame her death entirely on charities "pestering" her - she had been "under pressure".
It really is despicable that a person should be harassed in such a manner. So bad that she couldn't use the phone, or wouldn't.

"In the end, she wouldn't answer the phone. That's what caused a little bit of anxiety. Of course, the next thing we knew, Olive passed away."
Once you 'give' and take out a direct debit you run the risk of your details being passed on to others. DON'T DO IT!

Re: Charity Harassment!

I know it's appalling we recently had to get involved with an elderly neighbour who had ended up sending her entire pension to charities who rang her up. Disgusting behaviour from them when we cancelled the DDs.

It seems BT knows the phone numbers as they pre programme them into the number blocking phones they sell so why can't they just block them at source and stop them harassing people as they do ?

BT - despicable lot hell-bent on screwing everyone over for as much dosh as they can get away with if you ask me. As you say why don't they block such people at the source? Well, I think the answer is in your reply: 'number blocking phones they sell'. So there you go they make money from allowing the callers through.

Re: Charity Harassment!

Indeed we paid just over £30 for the privilege of stopping the calls peace at last but we shouldn't have to do it IMO

Re: Charity Harassment!

I learnt my lesson years ago about taking out a direct debit for a charity.
I was suddenly and mysteriously deluged with requests from other charities by post and telephone not just for financial support but as a collector putting envelopes through doors.

I canceled the DD and now all charity requests however worthy go in the bin. I support the causes I want discreetly .

Its the best way Meg - I'm very blunt with them on the phone because I now the distress they cause, they should be ashamed but it appears they are not .....

I know - it really is upsetting, they should be well above that behaviour .....

Re: Charity Harassment!

When Mum was alive she'd supported an air ambulance charity by sending money by DD. I suggested to mourners at her funeral that they might like to support this charity instead of flowers, and indeed we did have a nice sum collected, especially by her neighbours in the residential home.

However, it didn't take them long to write to ME afterwards, putting me on their mailing list! So much for gratitude.

I agree, this is a very sad situation.

Re: Charity Harassment!

They even make money selling our phone numbers to others which is unforgivable IMO
