genitalia

Yes, genitalia!

We've all got them, believe it or not, whether you're male or female your 'bits' are all part and parcel of who you are.

If we weren't all (most) so coy and silly about them then we would have no trouble walking around naked in front of our children, they then might have a healthier idea of what real bodies look like than the visual examples they get instead (most) from internet porn.

So a picture painted in 1886 by Gustav Courbet, The Origin of the World, hangs in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, but if you post it on Facebook, your profile is likely to be removed.

Does this make sense to you?

I wonder what GC would say now!

Re: genitalia

You're quite right, we do have a confused attitude to accepting our bodies, maybe some generation in the future might have a better attitude to it.

Re: genitalia

Nudity is OK but there is no way I will prune a prickly hedge without due protection

Re: genitalia

I would think it could be embarrassing for the men at times though as they can't hide their feelings like a woman can.

Re: genitalia

I don't think it necessarily follows ruthio. My parents always wandered around naked at home, we thought nothing of it. However I've chose not to be the same with my kids. I just didn't feel it was appropriate somehow but they never seemed to have any expectations of perfect bodies! Their partners are all pretty average!

Re: genitalia

We are fairly relxed about such things although we dont flaunt ourselves.

getting back to the issue of the painting ,Im surprised because that site which should not be mentioned shows all sorts of disgusting images of people doing the most awful things and yet choses to ban a piece of art!

Re: genitalia

Me neither, Anzac, always felt more at ease covered up and always respected my kids privacy....
But I suppose the point GC was making was that this is where we all emerge from!
I wonder how it was 'viewed' by the public in those days?

Cass, I so agree! Unnatural violence OK, ordinary nakedness not OK.

Re: genitalia

I know the picture Ruth I find it inelegant and not something I would want to view regularly but I don't mind a well painted nude.

My son saw many nudes as a child when we visited art galleries and National Trust House . I made no secret of my body when he was young and not easily embarrassed .

He was brought up with the attitude that bodies are beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of but there is 'a time and place' for everything and some people are embarrassed by nudity so we should respect that and not cause them embarrassment
