Several people have been killed in an early morning crash involving two trains in Bavaria, Germany, police say.
The passenger trains collided near Bad Aibling, around 40 miles southeast of Munich, at 6.48am local time, causing several wagons to overturn.
Police say rescue workers have found four dead at the site, along with 100 injured - including 15 very seriously hurt and 40 seriously hurt.
Spokesman Stefan Sonntag said the scene was still so confusing that it was difficult to put an exact number on the casualties, adding: "This is the biggest accident we have had in years in this region and we have many emergency doctors, ambulances and helicopters on the scene."
Rescuers are trying to free people still trapped in the wreckage.
German news agency DPA reports that eight rescue helicopters are standing on a lawn near the town's entrance and that more rescue workers are on their way to the scene. Pictures from the scene show dozens of ambulances lined up on a road nearby.
It is understood that the site of the collision is a single railway track and the cause of the crash is unknown.
Nigel Harris, managing editor of Rail Magazine, told Sky News: "Experience very sadly tells us that, in these circumstances, more often than not, one of the drivers might have passed a red signal.
"Once that signal has been missed...there is a horrible danger of something coming the other way.
"But, looking at the damage, it's highly likely that both drivers are among the dead, so your key witnesses are also missing."
Numerous commuters are also likely to be among the victims but, because of a holiday, few students are expected to be on the trains.
Regional train company Meridian, which operated the trains, said in a statement that "a tragic accident occurred on the single-track route between Rosenheim and Holzkirchen this morning, shortly after 7am."
