It's only a guess Patsy, they use all sorts of base metal, depending on the weight, I'll guess tin or lead.

The guy made the ring from 'wax' and had to use a magnifying glass to shape the intricate design - here is a picture in raw state .........

Patsy that's a wax for casting, all cast jewellery have to have a wax impression before they are cast in whatever metal, the wax is then put into a steel 'cup' then filled with a kind of white plaster called investment, when it hardens it's put into a furnace and the wax is burned out leaving the impression inside, gold, silver, or any metal is then poured in to fill the impression, it's called 'The Lost Wax' casting method.
