Satellite Train

Apparently, what I thought was a line of planes in the sky tonight is a string of 60(?) satellites! Why are there so many all at once?
Anyone know anything about it?

No I'm not Googling, I'm too lazy.

There is supposed to be a meteor shower visible for the next couple of nights.

Yes Tabs, going to look. This was a string of loads of lights all going south. Very odd to see!

https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/lyrid-me...folk-1-6613987

The Lyrid meteor shower – which takes place annually and is named after the constellation Lyra – was forecast to be visible with the naked eye from April 16 to April 25.

Stargazers hoping to spot the Lyrid meteor shower in the skies over Suffolk and Essex were instead treated to a view of the Starlink satellites, which passed by around 9.30pm and were expected to travel back at 11pm.

Suffolk astronomer Neil Norman said: “There are about 300 up there, but there could thousands in the future.” For those hoping to see the Lyrid meteor shower, the peak is expected late on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning. If the skies remain clear, it is possible the showers will still be visible over the next few nights.
https://explainingscience.org/2020/0...nk-satellites/

By the year 2025 SpaceX plan to have 12,000 Starlinks in orbit distributed as follows
  • 7,500 at 340 km altitude
  • 1,600 at 550 km altitude
  • 5,800 at 710 km altitude

According to a report on space.com ,SpaceX have sought permission to put an additional 30,000 Starlink satellites into orbit. If this were approved and the satellites were launched, it would bring the total number up to 42,000.

The purpose of the satellites is to provide worldwide fast Internet coverage.
Personally, I'm against cluttering up the sky with more rubbish .....
