Satnavs do send information back automatically, that is how they know if there is traffic congestion ahead of you and the average speed along the particular road you are travelling along.
That is why you should set them for "fastest route".

Mine is always set for fastest route, trouble is ,the fastest route isn't always the quickest, way, mine will always take me off the A64, past the college, and tescos, and when the students are leaving, it can add five or six minutes to my home time, yet if I go a ( slightly ) longer way I can arrive at the time indicated on the satnav

I would never attempt a lonf journey without a Satnav, road signage is awful nowadays.
Must update mine soon!
