Instagram

A 14 year old Molly Russell, took her life and father claims Instagram is partly responsible because of material found on her account. Government have urged social media companies to do more to prevent youngsters seeing graphic images or information on self-harm. Must be a nightmare for parents wondering what their children are logging on to.

Re: Instagram

Now that advertisers have become embroiled because their brands have appeared alongside graphic images more robust actions might now be implemented.

Re: Instagram

I worry about young impressionable teenagers reading some of the stuff that is posted on social media.

Many are vulnerable and don't need the kind of information that is sometimes posted.
We had an incident similar to Molly locally, so sad.

Re: Instagram

I was listening to something about this yesterday, that facebook etc can change what people search for - as we know with the Cambridge thingy last year. So a teen searching suicide sites will be flashed up sites like the samaritans etc

We all know big brother is watching us, let them use the technology to do good

Re: Instagram

Whilst many of these stories are very sad, can the youth of today not think for themselves?
I genuinely don't know why they are so easily influenced / worry so much about social media?

The problem with Instagram is their algorithms, when a search is made loads of other choices come up. A warning does come on screen and is mostly ignored. Government legislation will be considered if these companies don't do more to restrict harmful information.

On QT last night Nick Ferrari suggested companies making huge profits should be heavily fined and the money put into child mental health. Reducing their exposure and providing support to help cope with emotions that must be very frightening. A mental health counsellor in schools one idea put forward.

They feel under pressure to be perfect. Nobody is. The celebrity culture is everywhere.

A few years old this article.

Re: Instagram

Facebook's new vice-president Sir Nick Clegg has already pledged to do "whatever it takes" to make the company's platforms safer for young people.

Sir Nick was responding to the case of 14-year-old Molly Russell, who took her own life after viewing distressing self-harm images on Instagram in 2017.

Re: Instagram

I saw Molly's father on This Morning.
Lovely man, caring parent, very intelligent, articulate, responsible, they only found the full content of her internet browsing after her death.
The images she'd accessed would be unsuitable for most right thinking adults, let alone young impressionable minds.
I saw some of the images and was horrified.

How can any "business" defend showing graphic images glorifying self harm (cutting, burning, bruising...) and advocating and encouraging suicide. It beggars belief.

Since then many more stories have emerged...
