Why go into a town centre ? Yes indeed. We have driven to places worth visiting only to find nowhere to park. 'Car park full' notices or, if no notices, either queues or drive around the car park to find no spaces.
We tend to just leave the place and go somewhere else.
The only towns we visit these days are to look at interesting places, certainly not for shopping. Shopping takes place in out-of-town supermarkets (with free parking) or our local 'village' within walking distance.
As you say, many town centres are becoming ghost towns now, thanks to councils.
Their money-making schemes won't last for ever, though, as people will just not bother to go there. The councils who will succeed are those who have the foresight to provide convenient car parking.
