And who really needs four wheel drive?????
Depends on how many dirt roads you drive on. I drive on a lot but I only have 2 wheel drive however I do wish I had a lockable diff. Personally I didn't want to carry around all the extra diffs and transfer cases for something I would only need a couple of times a year.

I have only been stopped once by my vehicle only being 2WD when it rained on the Coober Pedy to Oodnadatta Track and they closed it to anything except 4WD and I turned back.

As someone mentioned one of the reasons for having a 4x4 is that they used to have a lower rate of import tax on them so the 4x4 cost about the same as a 2WD.

Re: Suv

Living in the back of beyond a 4x4 is very much needed as ours if off road a lot, handles the snow like a dream we'd be lost with out it.

they are taxed heavily here because someone has worked out that they use more road than other vehicles.

My Honda CRV was the best vehicle I have owned but too expensive to run in the end (Plus it was written off)

It got me through 2ft of flood water on Christmas day when other cars were trapped. It used to get me up hills in the snow and ice so that I could get to work and it rode potholes with no problem. I miss it.

Re: Suv

I learned to drive in a 18cwt van. You can't beat being sat high up so my cars were 4×4s until I was compelled to buy an estate car for reasons of economy. My latest car is Kia Sportage - once again sat in a high(ish) position. Much easier to get in and out of as you climb into the vehicle rather than drop down as you would in a car then climb out which is difficult with my bad legs.

I now have a Qashqai which is still fairly high up (not as high as the the CRV sadly). I had a BMW1 hire car for about a week but couldn't wait to give it back. Getting out was a case of opening the door and crawling out on my knees.
