Much play had been made in the Budget of the apparently lavish sums that some people can claim from the state. But is that the whole picture?
Richard Watson has spent the day in Stockton-on-Tees with a family who rely on state allowances for most aspects of their lives.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Successive governments have promised to make it more lucrative to work than stay at home. They have all failed. Once the kid with the cleft palette has had surgery I hope they at least stop that benefit. Conservatives - I didn't vote for you, but PLEASE sort this out.

Yet pensioners never get anything very much - have to pay full council tax because they get an extra pension and get taxed into the bargain, yet have worked all their lives! That chap in the video could get a job with the police with his army background, I am sure! To hear them talk of all the specialists for their baby, one would think that they were having to pay for it! It is disgraceful and does not encourage anyone to go back into work! What they never added to that money was his dole money!It is early days yet for the present government to change much but they did say that they would - wonder how long it will take someone in it to realise the amount of money they could save!

Far more is wasted with tax avoidance.Let`s not believe everything you read in the press. Go and talk to someone on benefits and find out how much they get and what it has to cover. The figures used are twisted - carers allowance for example is taken off existing benefits, not added to them.
Let`s not hammer people in trouble. It could be you and yours some time.
A few people play the system - our MPs can attest to this. It doesn`t mean all those sick, unemployed, desperate people out there are evil scroungers.

I have a friend who is a manager in the social offices and he wishes he could get the people to work concientiously in stead of discussing what happened on TV or where they went for a night our.
Another friend who also works in the same office just says it does not concern him about how much money people claim as long as it helps him to get through the day without any stress. When I point out that it is our money they are claiming he just shugs his shoulders and says it is up to the managers and investigators to stop them claiming.
