Re the £10 Christmas bonus, it has remained at £10 since it started in 1972.
The one-off, tax-free bonus was introduced as part of the Pensioners’ and Family Income Supplement Payments Act in 1972, under the Conservative government of Sir Edward Heath. It’s aim was to offer support during a time of high inflation. Today, people on a number of benefits, including Carer’s Allowance, contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and disability benefits, receive the money. It is also available for older people who receive the state pension.
The bonus has stayed at £10 since inception five decades ago except in 2008, when it increased to £70 to support 15 million vulnerable people during the financial crash. But the general lack of uprating has drawn criticism in recent times, as has the fact it is not available for Universal Credit claimants.
I spent £7 on my mobile phone, going through my recent transactions, from the bank, I went right through to September, how desperate am I,:nothing yet....
