The higher the GDP per capita, the higher the standard of living.

We are well behind the Netherlands on that.

The Netherlands have a very small economy - nowhere near the size of the UK. Thats why they are not in the G20.

Like Spain, Portugal, Austria, Poland etc. Just not big enough to be a major player in the world order.

And as members of the EU we make a difference. The EU has two representatives in the G7, apart from germany, france, italy, oh, and the UK.

Yes, it is an interesting table, and no doubt accurate.

But take a look at the order.

At the top: Luxembourg, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands. All countries who seem intent that we should remain in the EU.

Now look lower down the list: Italy, Spain, and much lower still, East European countries and especially Greece which has been almost irretrievably impoverished by the Euro.

I wonder why there should be so much disparity in a union of supposedly equal nations?

And right at the bottom of the list is the EU as a whole, well below us in the stakes.

Perhaps that tells us something too.

It tells me something about you, jbr. It's an average value. Take a look where the EU as a whole should rank on the list.

Disparity leads to discussions. Discussions help to understand the other party. That is a truly alien concept for british politics.
Most european countries tend to consider that it is better to have*bread*and an onion with peace than stuffed fowl with strife.

Which is the more likely?
The Lib Dems winning the general election and Jo Swinson becomes PM or a new breed of pigs that have wings and can fly.
I have a feeling that the latter is more likely.

Well, as the latter are around since 1977 (see picture) it only leaves for joswin to be your next pm.

She hasn't a chance. The only way her party is relevant is if we are in the EU.

On the 1st of November she can no longer revoke A50 so she disappears back up her own arse into liberal oblivion.

That wasn't the reason, Dr Gaulle had a deep seated loathing of anything Anglo Saxon especially the English and the Americans and was obsessed with the fear that they would come to dominate every sphere of influence. That was the main reason that he was against the English joining the EEC until the French had made sure that the CAP worked in their favour.

It's even deeper.

De Gaulle wanted to limit the English and American influence as much as possible. In 1961 he had also introduced the Fouchet plan, which was to lead to the European Political Union (EPU). De Gaulle wanted to turn Western Europe into a political, military and economically strong force, alongside America and the Soviet Union. That union would de facto be under Parisian leadership, because no country within the EEC was strong enough to go against France. "

Could England join the EEC in 1973 because De Gaulle had resigned in 1969?
"Well, President Georges Pompidou wasn't a sweetheart either. But in the late 1960s, France had given up the illusion of a political union led by France and the EEC was little more than a glorified customs union. So then England could get in there too. "
