All a big mistake imo?
Just like her deindustrialisation policy?

I know.... a series of mutually beneficial bilateral agreements would be better and WTO for everything else.

Everything in a market is down to supply and demand. Creating the housing boom.increased both. But demand increased at a much faster rate in a very short time because profits could be had. People ended up mortgaging, remortgaging and building property empires on money that only existed because of the boom.. It was a completely crazy policy but made Thatcher popular which was the whole point. Immigrants are living five to a room so hard to understand the pressure from them. There is a massive buy to let time bomb ticking.

You have to measure the economic costs and benefits rather than looking at the cash position.

Thatcher effectively destroyed about 80% of council house
stock by selling that stock off and didnt replace that stock!
Thus depriving future generations of a supply of good quality

This holds true to this day
Regards Donkeyman!
Selling council houses below market value is not the reason we have a shortage of affordable property on the market. It took ongoing maintenance costs off the hands of the councils and there was a move to housing associations taking over social housing. Or pushing people to rent from private landlords using housing benefits. Passing the buck to non state organisations that have less interest in welfare and an eye of the bottom line. So a boom.in buy to lets also fueled by government policy. Basically shot themselves in the foot with that.
