Castel de Monte

in Southern italy we visited

Castel del Monte (Italian for "Castle of the Mountain"; Barese: Castídde d'u Monte) is a 13th-century citadel and castle situated on a hill in Andria in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. It was built during the 1240s by the Emperor Frederick II, who had inherited the lands from his mother Constance of Sicily. In the 18th century, the castle's interior marbles and remaining furnishings were remove

Photo I took while there

So what is unusual about this particular Castle you may ask.

Well first of all it has 8 turrets, so what?

All but one of the turrets has no access to the roof to confound any enemy attack. So they could try getting to the roof 7 times before they found the right one

i Not only that, the turret that has access to the roof the staircase is anti clockwise. This means anyone with a sword can't use it as it would be against the centre column so no room to swing it about

Re: Castel de Monte

The planning of those turrets would seem to prove the 'ancients' were very wise! Great photos.
